This year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of service. In recognition, the UK Government has announced an extra Bank Holiday. This means there will be four days of celebration commencing Thursday 2 June – Sun 5 June (including the additional Fri 3 June Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday).
Hedgeley Parish Council is planning to join in the national celebrations as follows:
In addition to the new wall to protect the well in the Powburn Community Garden, further improvements are well underway.
A planter that will be used to create a bed of red roses has been constructed and installed at the Breamish Valley War Memorial. The angular, U-shaped wooden planter was made to the same high standards as the Bolton Road Sign Planters and the Powburn Road Sign Planters by Chris Armit from Newcastleton (Chris constructed the Bolton and Powburn planters).

As round as an apple, as deep as a cup,
And all the king’s horses can’t fill it up.
Not a lot to be said, really…2020 has been unprecedented.
But now with the positive news of vaccines against coronavirus starting to be rolled out, there’s good reason to hope for a happier 2021.
As mentioned in the post entitled Remembrance Sunday 2020, May Wilson BEM has today laid a commemorative poppy wreath in remembrance of the fallen from the Breamish Valley at the Breamish Valley War Memorial in the Powburn Community Garden.
May Wilson (Hedgeley Parish Council) has sent the following information today.
No doubt you’ll have seen the wonderful Christmas Tree in the Powburn Community Garden (pictured above and below).
In April last year (2015), Sid Smailes planted five ornamental crab apple trees in the Community Garden in Powburn.
Well, after carefully tending them for over a year, they are now all flowering – and they look wonderful, with each tree showing a profusion of white flowers. I’m sure that in a few year’s time, once they’ve become really established, they are going to look even better. They certainly cheer up the community garden, which is a real asset to the residents of Powburn.
Once again, many thanks to Sid for all his efforts in maintaining the garden for the benefit of residents and visitors.
Thanks to the hard work of everyone who organised the Tea in the Garden event that took place yesterday I, for one, woke up this morning with a smile on my face.
What a wonderful time we had in Powburn’s Community Garden yesterday afternoon. Having had a few drops of rain in the morning, the sun came out almost on cue at 3 o’ clock, jumpers came off, and…the party began!
Thanks again to the hard work of Sid Smailes in looking after and improving the Powburn Community Garden.
A couple of weeks ago, Sid rolled the ground to level it – particularly after having a number of mole hills in the garden.
And, just a few days ago, five new ornamental trees were planted. They are Malus ‘John Downie’ – a decorative crab apple.
