Holy Island staithes disappearing fast
Now that the UK lockdown has eased, and it’s easier to travel to some of the local beauty spots, I took the opportunity yesterday to make my first trip to Holy Island.
The wooden staithes – part of an old jetty – in front of Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island are an iconic part of the seascape.
However, with the unceasing flowing in and out of the North Sea tides, and as obviously expected, the old wooden posts are decaying quickly now. I can’t imagine that it will be too long before they disappear altogether.
So, it’s good to be able to make some record of their having once been an integral part of the island’s life.
