Remembrance Sunday 2020

Background

We are sure that members of the local community will recognise the current unusual circumstances surrounding the possibility of commemorating Remembrance Sunday this year. While the UK Government has now published guidance (published 3 Nov 2020), the required actions and responsibilities mean that there is insufficient time to organise a public event. However, we do not want to let this commemoration pass us by and we want to assure you that the fallen of the Breamish Valley are never forgotten. Consequently, a wreath will be laid by May Wilson BEM on behalf of the local community.

Log Bank LANTRA Training

The Northumberland Log Bank owes its continuing success to the help of several willing volunteers.

Of course, proper training of people who volunteer to cut and remove logs is essential. And yesterday (Saturday 10 October 2020), three volunteers undertook LANTRA training in safe chainsaw use and crosscutting. Lantra is an awarding body for land-based industries in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

New steps to River Breamish

If you’re one of many who enjoy the walk around the Hedgeley Lakes at Powburn, you’ll probably be aware that some of the railway embankment steps had fallen into disrepair over recent years.

These are the steps leading down from the embankment that overlooks the west lake, just to the side of the memorial bench dedicated to Allan Forrest (late Chairman of Powburn Show) [GPS: 55°26’53.964″ N 1°54’26.22″ W]

While life has been difficult for everyone over the past few months during the lockdown, people experiencing fuel poverty continued to benefit from the services of the Northumberland Log Bank. Operating out of Wooler and Haydon Bridge, their services are invaluable to many residents in north Northumberland and in west Northumberland/Tynedale.
